3 days – Safari To Murchison Falls National Park

Gazetted in 1952, Murchison Falls N.P. is Uganda’s oldest and largest National Park; it covers an area of 3,840sq kilometers. It is situated on the last stretch of Victoria Nile where it forms a delta to join L. Albert. This park is the only National Park in the world crossed by the Nile River, with spectacular views of the Mighty Murchison Falls, over 451 recorded bird species, and 76 mammal species including four of the Big Five.

Wildlife adventure at its best as you take a boat ride on the Nile to the Bottom of Murchison Falls, Game-drive in the vast savannah grassland, and chimpanzees and other primates tracking in Kanio Pabidi Forest.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Kampala - Rhinos - Murchison Falls N.P
At 0630hrs, depart your hotel and route via the outskirts of the city heading to the Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is a special occasion to track the extremely endangered White Rhino at ZZiwa. You will not only witness the most successful Rhino breeding project in the world but also contribute to their survival. Proceed to Masindi town and access the park via the Kichumbanyobo gate. Take a scenic ride under shades of green, cross the season Sambiya River to the Nile River, continue and cross by ferry to the North Bank and settle in at Paraa Lodge. Later in the evening, take a sunset game drive and end your day in an adventurous style.  Accommodation at your preferred lodging facility.

Day 2
Sunrise game-drive – Waterfall Boat – Hike to the Top of Murchison Falls.
Wake-up to the wild sounds and join your driver/guide on an early morning game drives. Murchison Falls is haven to 76 mammal species and over 451 recorded bird species. The north-bank section is a savannah that is naturally decorated with borassus palms, acacia trees and riverine woodland. Looking out for Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Herds of Buffaloes, Rothschild giraffe, Hippos by the delta, Waterbuck, Bushback and Jackson’s Hartebeest among others. The birdlife is also rich with species like the Abyssinian Ground Horn Bill, Grey Herons, African Fish Eagle and Saddle-billed Storks among others. Return to the Lodge for lunch. At 1400hrs, transfer down to the pier/dock on the Nile River. Get on board and undergo briefing by the boat-guide. Against the current, start your boat-cruise heading to Murchison Falls. En-route, you are likely to see Hippos, Nile Crocodiles and other animal species grazing on the banks. Birding enthusiasts are likely to spot African Fish Eagles, Pied Kingfishers, Malachite Kingfishers, Red-throated bee-eaters and egret species among others. The boat shall pull over close to a rock before the “Devil’s Cauldron”, take pictures, sit on the rocks and exploit every moment with full sight of the Bottom of Murchison Falls. Dis embark from the boat and take a hike to the Top of Murchison Falls. At the top, you will bear witness to the great wonder of nature as Mighty Nile funnels itself through a 7 – 8 meter gorge. With incredible force, the Nile roars and groans creating a permanent spillage and a set of rainbow arches. Join your driver/guide and ride back to the hotel.

Day 3
As they call and hoot (chimpanzees) welcoming the light of the day, wake up, take an early breakfast, check out and transfer to Kanio Pabidi Forest.  Undergo briefing by the resident ranger/guide and follow him/her as he leads you to the chimpanzee sanctuary. Other resident primates are olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangbeys among others. Your informative guide shall show you the various types of trees and narrate stories about the forest in the ancient times of the traditional kings. The highlight of the tracking session is “man’s closest cousins”, the chimpanzees that you can see at close quarters. Return to the base and your waiting driver/guide shall route you back to either Kampala or Entebbe with lunch en route.
