Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Trekking, Nature Walks and Peak Climb

Gazette in 1991, Rwenzori Mountains National park is assumed the state of a World Heritage Site three years later in 1994! The park covers a vast area of 996 km² and the most elevated part park is Margherita Peak that stands at the height of 5,109 meters above sea-level! On 24th May 1888, Henry Mutton Stanley exposed the great Rwenzori Mountain Ranges to the rest of the world. He called it Rwenzori; this locally means “Rain Maker” or “cloud-king”! Ptolemy, an AD 150 Alexandrine Geographer is credited for imagining the existence of a Mountain Source of the Nile that he called “Mountains of the Moon”!

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is home to the unique Rwenzori Mountains; they are bloke mountains that host the third, fourth, and fifth highest ranges in Africa! Altitude-wise, they are only exceeded by Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya. The three ranges carry permanent snow and glaciers whereas the slopes are covered with dense forests.  Technically, the Rwenzori Mountains are the most challenging highland to hike in Africa.

Being a “rainmaker”, the Rwenzori Mountains have remarkable wet seasons in that it can rain even in the dry season.   The wet season is experienced from March–May and from August – December hitting average rainfall of 2500mm. Daily weather conditions alternate between cold at night and warm during the day. The Mountain National Park is, however; open for visiting all year round!

Rwenzori Mountains National Park hosts 18 species of mammals, 217 bird species, nine reptile species, and six amphibian species. Among the large mammals are elephants, buffalo, giant forest hogs, bush-buck, chimpanzees, and leopards. Among the unique species in the Rwenzoris are Three Horned Chameleon, Rwenzori Colobus, Rwenzori Turaco, and the Rwenzori double-collared sunbird. Trekking, Nature Walks, and Peak Climb are the major activities in this park.
